The CAEC (Canadian Adult Education Credential) is Canada’s high school equivalency exam that replaced the GED in 2024.
The exam provides adult learners who didn’t complete high school with the opportunity to earn an educational credential that’s accepted in the same manner as a standard high school diploma. Holding a CAEC indicates high school-level proficiency.
The CAEC assessment consists of five separate sub-exams that can be taken, if desired, one (or more) at a time. You can read more about what questions are on the CAEC test <- in this post.
The exam is available in English and French. The five CAEC modules measure a candidate’s proficiency in these subject areas:
- language writing
- language reading
- math
- science
- social studies
To receive a CAEC, candidates must answer at least 55 percent of the questions correctly on all five sub-exams.
The CAEC assessment is a challenging exam, and thorough preparation is crucial for success. The exam measures knowledge and skills at a level similar to that of high school seniors upon graduation!
There are some excellent online CAEC preparatory programs available, for example, the CAEC course designed by Cansego. Online learning might give you an edge since you decide what, where, and when to prepare for your CAEC exam.
This flexibility can help you prepare more quickly, but some students learn better with an instructor. If so, check out the prep facilities listed below.

The CAEC exam is fully computer-based, but it cannot be taken online. You must show up at one of Alberta’s designated CAEC test facilities and write the five subtests in person.
Please note that you must bring two valid, non-expired forms of ID. If that’s the case, you will not be permitted into the testing room.
