How to Prepare for the CAEC Exam

The CAEC (Canadian Adult Education Credential) is Canada’s new high school equivalency (HSE) exam that replaced the outdated Canadian GED test in early 2024.

Many students ask us how to prepare for the CAEC exam, and in this post, we will give you the answers, though every student learns differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

The CAEC exam is quite challenging, and getting optimally prepared is crucial to your success.

Benefits of the CAEC

Holding the CAEC diploma will qualify you for jobs that were previously unattainable and allow for job advancement.

Additionally, the credential qualifies you for post-secondary educational opportunities in the same way a regular high school diploma does.

In this post, we will give you CAEC test preparation tips and explain how to excel in the CAEC exam to pursue your educational dreams and reach your professional goals.

Please refrain from using GED materials when preparing for your CAEC exam! The former paper-based Canadian GED test contained nothing specifically related to Canada.

The CAEC exam, however, is steeped in Canadian traditions, history, geography, values, and so forth, so using GED study materials is a recipe for disaster!

The following Project Read video explains a lot about the CAEC exam:

Online CAEC prep

The CAEC exam is administered exclusively at Canada’s designated testing centres. There is NO online CAEC exam available.

But that doesn’t mean you cannot prepare for the challenging exam with a well-structured online course, such as the CAEC prep course designed by Cansego.

The CAEC exam includes five independent modules (sub-exams) covering the areas of math, language reading, language writing, science, and social studies. You can sit for these tests one (or more) at a time and in the order you prefer.

If you decide to prepare with an online course, note that this requires well-rounded self-discipline on your behalf, as no teacher is looking over your shoulders to help.

On the other hand, if online learning suits you well, you are in the driver’s seat, and you may proceed much faster than in a classroom with a set schedule.

If you plan to prepare at a physical prep site and live in Ontario, visit our page listing all CAEC prep and test sites in Ontario.

You should absolutely take multiple CAEC practice tests. Firstly, to determine your academic strengths and weaknesses so know what sectors to focus on, and secondly, to get acquainted with the formats of the questions on the CAEC exam.

Apart from the language writing Essay section, the questions are multiple-choice, but it is good to understand what they ask and how they are structured.

Age restrictions

When participating in a prep class in a physical prep facility, be aware that most adult education sites and programs require you to be at least 18 years of age to enroll, to ensure participants are outside the traditional Canadian K-12 system.

It goes without saying that when you learn with an online course, there are no age restrictions and that you can proceed at the pace that suits you best.

Practically all Canadian employers accept the CAEC in lieu of a common high school diploma, and colleges, universities, and technical schools also recognize the CAEC. For all Saskatchewan CAEC prep sites, <- visit this page.

The CAEC test

The CAEC test is Canada’s high school equivalency exam that gives adult learners who did not finish high school the chance to earn an educational credential equivalent to a regular high school degree.

The CAEC passing score is set so that students who pass the exam may be expected to have knowledge and skills comparable to those of high school graduates.

The CAEC exam does so through five independent, modular subject tests that can be taken, if wished, one at a time and in any desired order.
