The new Canadian-made high school equivalency exam is the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) test, which comprises five independent, modular sub-exams that can be taken individually and in any order.
The five sub-exams assess an applicant’s knowledge in the fields of Social Studies, Language Writing, Language Reading, Science, and Mathematics.
The CAEC replaced the Canadian GED exam in 2024 in much of Canada, and the credential is recognized as proof of high school equivalency. It is accepted in all provinces and territories across Canada.
Colleges, universities, employers, government agencies, and apprenticeship programs are recognizing and accepting the CAEC as an educational credential that’s equivalent to a common OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma, Grade 12).
The CAEC is awarded to adult learners who answer at least 55 percent of all questions on each sub-exam correctly. The Credential is granted by Ontario’s Ministry of Education.
For adult learners who never finished high school, earning a CAEC will help secure a well-paying job or advance in their current employment. There are so many good reasons to earn your CAEC!
Online learning is an excellent option for many CAEC students, especially if they know how to learn independently, for example, with the online program from Cansego.
Some CAEC hopefuls, however, learn better guided by a teacher. For these CAEC students, we list all prep facilities in Ontario.
Please note that the CAEC exam is not available online! You must take the five sub-exams at a test facility in the province where you live.

GED diploma remains valid
Across Canada, the GED diploma continues to be accepted as a high school equivalent credential. Bear also in mind that if you have already passed portions of the former Canadian GED test, you can use your results toward the CAEC exam until May 2027.
Having a CAEC will provide you with many essential advantages! The credential qualifies you for better employment and a college or university education.
